Color exercise & physical 3d outcome exercise.

Image
In class, we were asked to experiment with different colors and media based on one of our outcomes, in this post I will explain how it went and what I improved based on this task.     This was the base structure that I printed for this task. I used a 1:400 scale and 0.3 = 0.5 pens, this was supposed to be an elevation which is why it has no perspective. In class, I first started by coloring using different color patterns, and I tried this one in which the main focus was on the glass fronts, and how they would look. I also wanted to see what the stone tiling would look like around the arches which I don't think was successful at all. I also tried this combination but then again I think it just looks unpleasant. here I got the idea to make it more monocolored, with black columns and arch contours which I think are just classical and typical that is why I decided to broaden it and started working on this on my digital 3d model. I decided it was best to use white marble as a domin...

Research post N*6: Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona Pavilion

Image
Barcelona Pavilion by Mies Van Der Rohe While researching, I came across one of the most famous examples of the Modern Movement's creation, the Barcelona Pavilion. It has served as an inspiration for many generations of architects. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich created it for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition as the German national pavilion. Constructed with steel, glass, and several types of stone, The building's metal framework is tiled with four different varieties of marble: Roman travertine, green Alpine marble, ancient Greek green marble, and golden onyx from the Atlas Mountains in Africa. Other noble materials that are used include glass and steel. Their organization and design are characterized by a virtually minimalist purity of shapes.  Another point is the structure, I like the small discreet columns, they are discreet and since they are aluminium-coated, they blend in with the rest of the structure. Which is what I thought about doin...

Research Post N*5: Arch design in Different cultures.

Image
For this project, I found many sources of inspiration in Leicester especially in the old town, as it has typical European Classical Architecture, which is close to Palladio's work as well as the gothic revival style. In this post, I will discuss the different arch designs in various cultures. Fig 1 Firstly, the world-famous gothic arches, are specially designed for main entrances. This has heavily been used in cathedrals and churches as it flows with the medieval style historically and in terms of its design.  Fig 2 Secondly, through visual research, I recognized similarities between a building in Leicester and the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba below.  Form: The pointed arches in Leicester are less visible compared to those in Córdoba, which are more curved and horseshoe-shaped. Function: The arches in both structures give structural support in addition to visual satisfaction decor: The Córdoba arches frequently have complex details inspired by Islamic art. Depending on re...

Idea Development N*2

Image
Fig 1 This was a rough sketch that I made in my own time to conceptualize what the south elevation would look like, I think the main idea for this would be symmetrical stairs, with an infinity pool in addition to a fountain in relation to it. The restaurant overlooks it and the whole scenery. Fig 2 This is a sketch of what I wanted the section to look like, on the ground floor, we find the Spa that is separated from the pool by a glass wall, with the lifts in the center of the Lobby of the 1st floor, Which goes onto the pool but also has two staircases going up to the restaurant. Fig 3 This was a site plan that I thought about with the rest of the facilities not just the main one. As you can see, the top art is the main building which has stairs and a pathway that goes onto another circular swimming pool, with a circular pathway. Moreover, it goes onto a pathway roundabout, to the right, you can see a multi-purpose pitch the other side has a football pitch, and I thought to make an Ame...

Research post N*4: The houses of parliament and Moorish architecture

Image
This structure is what I find to be the most gorgeous one in the United Kingdom, alongside the best in the world, it is a prime pillar of Gothic Architecture. A fire broke out at London's historic Palace of Westminster in 1834. resulting in burning it down to ashes. The fire provided Britain with an opportunity to replace what was seen to be an antiquated, outdated, disorganized collection of government buildings as well as to construct a Gothic Revival monument that would symbolically represent the UK's global leadership and the origins of modern democracy. (Fiederer, 2016) The Palace of Westminster Picture by Alex brown. With the help of A.W.N. Pugin, Sir Charles Barry created the current Gothic Revival structures. The cornerstone was placed in 1840, construction started in 1837, and it was completed in 1860. ( The Editors of Encyclopaedia 1998 ) This iconic structure has always fascinated me for its style, I think it is the closest Gothic revival structure to what through h...

Research Post N*3: Alhóndiga Bilbao cultural and leisure centre

Image
The original structure was a wine cellar constructed between 1905 to 1909. Redesigned by Philippe Starck The facility has recreation spaces, movie theatres, shops, restaurants, auditoriums, and exposition halls. Which is accurate and relevant to my project. Fig: Alhóndiga Bilbao Cultural and Leisure Center by Philippe Starck. Fig 2 & 3: Upper swimming pool. The most interesting part to me is the top swimming pool and terrace.  Visible from the plaza below, the translucent roof and floor of the sun terrace and enclosed swimming pool on the roof are attached (Mills, 2010). This creates a bond between the exterior and the interior and allows enough natural sunlight to go through. However, I think it could've been bigger, in order to make the clients feel more outdoors. This is exactly what I am going to implement in my project; the pools will have glass roofing to allow a sense of nature and openness. I will talk about the type of glass further in the next posts.  M...

Research Post N*2: Site analysis/ environmental analysis

Image
The project is set in the town of New Cornwell, Connecticut, USA. I took a screenshot from Google Earth of the area, a typical low-profile American town with great green spaces. Unfortunately, the town suffered a horrible fire that leveled it to the ground, therefore the site will only be limited by the street. The site will only be limited  by three roads; Shunpike for the west elevation, Sanford Ln for the north, and Alexander Dr for the east.  Here is a bird's view of the site, it is basically a rectangle that is 140m large (north and south elevations) and 160m long.  At first, I thought about making the north part 120m. However, that will make the arches too circular, because the distance between the columns is too long, I will discuss these decisions further in the next posts.     Weather : Summertime temperatures in Cromwell range from a pleasant 10-15 degrees Celsius at night to a warm 25–30 degrees Celsius during the day. I think the weather is gre...

Research Post N*1: Andrea Palladio and Palladianism.

Image
During this break, I discovered the Palladian style in architecture whose father is Andrea Palladio. According to Richardson (2024), Pietro Andrea della Gondola (1508–1580). Palladio was regarded as the most successful architect of the sixteenth century, for which he was copied up to four centuries after his death by numerous other architects. Portrait of Palladio by Alessandro Maganza Based on what I have researched and his beautiful buildings, I think I can see why so many consider his work phenomenal, I would say that his style gives a sense of organization since it is mostly centralized, and the entrance is always in the middle for example and the essence of his work is more focused on the detail of the functional entities of the building. I think it might be linked back to the fact that he started as a mason.  According to Ewing et al (1974), t here is more to a Palladian house's tightness and appropriateness than just a sense of comfort and symmetry. It is the preva...

week three: research link sheet

from ideas to research. link .

Pre-project outline

Image
Here is the link to my sign off sheet Project signoff  (my own) In this tutorial, my tutor and I discussed what my project will look like in terms of design which will be classical/ gothic and Moorish. Then, we discussed the materials that I think I will use in my 3d outcome; wood, acetate, acrylic, and plaster. We also discussed the further research that I will do which will be about Palladianism, Classical architecture, and the relationship between Gothic Revival and Moorish architecture. Additionally, I am going to research the different styles of architecture used in the USA, and styles of arches in different cultures and styles, with emphasis on Moorish and Gothic styles. I will also research a few aspects of decoration may that be out of stone or plaster. I will also research a few designers such as; Andrea Palladio, and Charles Barry. Furthermore, I am going to research the different materials that I can potentially include in my project such as toughened glass aluminu...

idea development N*1

Image
Idea development My main concept was more classical and Romanesque in nature. It would include gathering about sixteen columns under one roof to create an opulent and retro atmosphere. The structure would have four stories.   (My own picture) This is the type of columns that initially gave me inspirations to do this style of architecture, it is a vintage building in Leicester city center that I always pass by, it is what I had in mind at first when think about the design above. (m y own) This was the second plan, heavily based on geometric shapes. I wanted it to have both an organized appearance and be aesthetically beautiful. At first, I suppose road junctions inspired me since I was thinking about how people would move through the building, which made me think about how all items and entities would flow. My goal was to create a geometric design with a swimming pool outside and two pieces joined by an organic-shaped sphere, the geometric section resembled a plus sign. I beli...

mind map: brainstorming Ideas.

Image
Generating Ideas In this session, we tried to brainstorm a few ideas and inspirations for our projects, and ever since, I have had many ideas that range from Roman, classical, and Palladian architecture from what I have seen, I can only conclude that the essence of this style is symmetry and geometrical shapes, onto colonial and modernist.  (My own picture.) At first, I had a brain freeze because I did not know what to draw, but then I started sketching the structure which I consider to be modernist, that is what I think will make a good gym for a start. However, this seems too simple and too plain, which is the reason why I started thinking about the inspiration for Romans and classical architecture that I had in the holidays. That explains the sketches of the Roman dome which I find interesting because it resembles the domes that I usually saw in mosques and in Muslim architecture. In addition to pillars and arches that I think have an enormous effect on the design aside from the...

Term 3: Welcome Post

Image
Welcome back to my blog, this is the 3rd and last term of this year. I am looking forward to another experience with yet another project, I hope I will get to improve most of the flaws from the last two terms, which includes the need for a deeper analysis of the research that I will do and show how it relates to my work, as that was something that I lacked in the last project in terms of building connections between research and understanding it to further prove my process of thought. I will also make sure to accommodate the blogs to the marking criteria regularly which was something that I lacked last term. Unfortunately, I did not use software for my 2d outcomes as much as I wanted to, in this project I plan on utilizing various tools, to reach a higher level of efficiency and precision in my design, which I think will help me in my undergraduate course.. Lastly, it was also hard to plan and manage my time, which made the project lack momentum in terms of blog posting, design de...

Term Reflection

Image
Click on image to access the link. This term had its complications surely,, all in all, I believe that it went well and I am happy with the outcome. Even though this term was challenging, it has helped me improve a lot of my skills, particularly with scaling, drawing, and 3d model making. Furthermore, it was intellectually nourishing to start from scratch with an idea and constantly coming back to it. I gained a lot of knowledge from this endeavor, which was a positive experience. I have learnt how to sketch my idea, research about it, develop it, accommodate the project for the client and their needs, etcetera. the workshops have been an important experience where I have learnt many skills. Throughout this term, I was not only able to document my process but also showcase my way of thinking about the project as well as my critical mind. In conclusion., I can say that this term was fairly satisfying in terms of outcome and the overall knowledge that I have learnt through this mod...

Design boards: the making and results.

Image
for this part of the project, I only used photoshop for all of my design boards.  here I copied and pasted pictures of materials that will be used for this project in addition to texts that I paraphrased from my blogs with references. here I pasted a chart of the demographics of Leicester along with my own GPS image of the city and the University. here I pasted a section of the project  And here, I put some of the 2d outcomes  Final outcomes of the design boards: Links for the 3 pictures: https://www.metalsupplies.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/mild-steel-column.jpg https://greencitizen.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Now-We-Can-Recycle-CO2-Into-Eco-Friendly-Concrete-featured-image.jpg https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.qualitywindowanddoorinc.com%2Fblog%2Flow-e-tempered-glass-windows%2F&psig=AOvVaw0i05fTSktcDQuhnhT_F4ys&ust=1710286916900000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBMQjRxqFwoTCNDard_W7YQDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE Here...
