Research Post N*5: Arch design in Different cultures.
For this project, I found many sources of inspiration in Leicester especially in the old town, as it has typical European Classical Architecture, which is close to Palladio's work as well as the gothic revival style.
In this post, I will discuss the different arch designs in various cultures.
Fig 1
Firstly, the world-famous gothic arches, are specially designed for main entrances. This has heavily been used in cathedrals and churches as it flows with the medieval style historically and in terms of its design.

Secondly, through visual research, I recognized similarities between a building in Leicester and the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba below.
Form: The pointed arches in Leicester are less visible compared to those in Córdoba, which are more curved and horseshoe-shaped.
Function: The arches in both structures give structural support in addition to visual satisfaction
decor: The Córdoba arches frequently have complex details inspired by Islamic art. Depending on regional practices, I think the Leicester arches may have simpler or varied decorative ornaments.

I made this sketch to experiment with the versatile arch possibilities for my project, here I first tried the ogree-centered arch, which overall was fine, however, I added the pointed multifoil part.
I do not think that I will go further with this decision because it might be problematic, especially for the 3d model and the material consideration.
I am very fond of the columns in both of these cases, I think they are discrete and leave room for the arches to showcase themselves, verily, I included them in my project with one adjustment, the columns will be more dominant and will take up more height in contrast to these, which are engaged inside the arches.
Here is a visual representation of what it would look like,

For the purpose of making that decision, I visited the Leicester Cathedral and took pictures of what I found to be relevant to my project.
These arches have a very dramatic sense of style I would say, emitting a perception of grandiosity, that is not only evident from the height, but I think it is also showcased by the stonework on one hand and the fact that the columns take up space since they are quite thick.
