Research Post N*7: Materials and sustainability

In this post, I will discuss the different materials and justify their sustainability.

Toughened glass:

Ordinary float glass that has undergone a treatment to increase its resistance to damage is known as toughened safety glass. This makes it far more difficult for an accident or force to shatter than regular glass panes. Because of its robustness and safety, toughened glass is employed in many different applications. #1 Toughened Glass Manufacturers & Suppliers UK (2021)
I am using this material mainly for safety reasons, since when it shatters, it breaks into small safe pieces, secondly, it is durable which is in the context of sustainability as well as environmental concerns such as pollution. Another point is that it is resistant to heat and all weather conditions. Anon (2020)

recycled concrete:
Since recycled concrete has the same qualities as regular concrete but produces less pollution due to CO2 emissions during manufacture, I utilised it instead. To produce recyclable materials, concrete recycling involves breaking down, removing, and crushing concrete from building sites. It is also incredibly economical and energy-efficient. (nationwide, n.d.)

Aluminium:

I chose aluminium for the structural columns and beams of the Lo Svago Centre because of its exceptional toughness and environmental friendliness. Aluminium is a great material for the rigorous architectural requirements of this project because of its exceptional strength and low weight. Additionally, because of its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, it can be utilised to make elegant, thin structural sections that support large loads without adding extra weight, maintaining the open, airy atmosphere of the Centre. Marble:

I also chose white marble for its elegance, marble was made by nature to be weatherproof. It can withstand wind, rain, and snow since it is resilient to temperature changes. Marble has a Mohs hardness score of 3, making it soft and porous as well. Because of this, some individuals might believe marble is inappropriate for outdoor use. (admin, 2021)

Granite:

the process that this material goes through is the following: complete Melted stone under pressure is cooled steadily and crystallizes to create black granite. Almost no materials have ever endured or will endure as long as granite, which has been developing for billions of years. An erosion ratio of 0.125" per 1,000 years is boasted by the majority of polished granites outside. (Stoneply, nd.)

I chose this material as a coating for the aluminium columns.

It will look like this.
